Death is a very intimate and private, yet often political and public matter. For Nuvein’s El Monte’s Day of the Dead Celebration, The South El Monte Arts Posse will present a public reading of obituaries and eulogies by artists and activists. Saul Sarabia, a Los Angeles based social activist and former faculty at UCLA, will read a “living eulogy” for his father. Froylan Enciso, a Mexico City based academic and journalist with Nuestra Aparente Rendicion, will share a selection of his published obituaries for Mexico’s victims of the U.S. and Mexican state’s failed drug war. SEMAP’s co-director and writer, Carribean Fragoza, will contribute real and fictional obituaries for El Monte people and places.
After the reading, join us for an obituary writing workshop to celebrate the lives of your dearly departed.
